Uterine Health
The most significant contribution to pelvic pain seen in women is due to conditions affecting the uterus.
Pelvic Inflammatory Disease is caused by chlamydia, gonorrhea and other enteric bacteria that spread throughout the pelvis, causing moderate to severe pain & tenderness. PID can lead to a decreased quality of life and infertility.
Endometriosis is another common condition contributing to pelvic pain that goes undiagnosed in many sufferers. It is characterized by the growth of endometrial tissue (the type of tissue that women shed from the inside of their uterus during their periods) outside of the uterus, such that each month during her period a women will bleed into her pelvic cavity. This pain can be debilitating for many.
Treating the originating infection and reducing inflammation are keys to restoring fertility and reproductive health with both of the above conditions.
Uterine Fibroids are common benign tumors (meaning not malignant, not cancerous) of the uterus . The size of any given fibroid varies and a women will typically have multiple fibroids at once. The most common symptom of fibroids is very heavy menstrual bleeding and long lasting periods that may cause anemia. Miscarriages, trouble conceiving and persistent bloating or the feeling of pressure in the pelvis are other effects of fibroids. Hysterectomies (the surgical removal of the uterus) are now recommended by most doctors in response to fibroids that cause heavy bleeding, though this option is not ideal for patients who still want to get pregnant in the future or those that hope to avoid major surgery.
