Craniosacral Therapy: A Gentle Hands-On Approach to Health
Craniosacral Therapy (CST) is a gentle hands-on technique that has positively addressed numerous health conditions. By working with the craniosacral system, the body’s central nervous system can be normalized and corrected; restrictions in the body’s tissue can be released, thus enabling the individual to return to a state of health and well-being.
The body’s craniosacral system comprises of the membranes as well as the cerebrospinal fluid that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord. It extends from the cranium (skull, face, and mouth) down to the sacrum (tailbone area). Any restrictions (caused by stress, tension, trauma, disease) in these membranes can directly impact all aspects of the central nervous system. CST practitioners will first palpate for the craniosacral system to locate where the restrictions are in the body. The practitioners then work with the body’s innate healing abilities, as well as the craniosacral rhythm and system as our guide, to correct these restrictions.
The roots of CST date back to the early 1900’s with osteopathic physician William Sutherland where he believed that the bones of the skull were designed to allow for movement. CST as it is practiced today was later developed and refined by osteopathic physician John E. Upledger in 1975 where he embarked on a scientific journey to confirm Sutherland’s idea and discovered the craniosacral rhythm and its implications to health.
